आजादी के बाद का इतिहास इस प्रकार है -
1947 : 15 अगस्त को देश को अंग्रेजों की गुलामी से निजात मिली।
1948 : 30 जनवरी को महात्मा गाँधी की हत्या। इसी वर्ष भारतीय हॉकी टीम ने लंदन ओलिंपिक में स्वर्ण पदक जीता।
1950 : 26 जनवरी को भारत गणतंत्र बना। संविधान लागू।
1951 : देश की पहली पंचवर्षीय योजना लागू।
1952 : देश में पहले आम चुनाव। कांग्रेस 489 में से 364 सीटें जीतकर सत्ता पर काबिज। हेलसिंकी ओलिंपिक में भारतीय हॉकी टीम को स्वर्णिम सफलता।
1954 : भारत और चीन के बीच पंचशील समझौता।
1956 : राज्यों का पुनर्गठन।
1960 : भारत और पाकिस्तान में सिंधु जल समझौता।
1962 : अक्टूबर में चीन ने भारत पर हमला किया। नवंबर में चीन का दूसरा हमला। आजादी की फिजा में साँस ले रहे देश के युवकों के लिए पहली गंभीर चुनौती।
1963 : भारत ने पहला रॉकेट प्रक्षेपण किया।
1964 : जवाहरलाल नेहरू की मौत। लालबहादुर शास्त्री प्रधानमंत्री बने।
1965 : कश्मीर को लेकर भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच दूसरी जंग।
1966 : लालबहादुर शास्त्री का निधन। इंदिरा गाँधी देश की पहली महिला प्रधानमंत्री बनीं। ऑपरेशन फ्लड की शुरुआत।
1967 : हरित क्रांति की शुरुआत।
1969 : कांग्रेस का विभाजन। बैंकों का राष्ट्रीयकरण। पहली सुपरफास्ट रेलगाड़ी राजधानी एक्सप्रेस नई दिल्ली से हावड़ा के बीच दौड़ी। रेलवे की एक बड़ी उपलब्धि।
1971 : भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच जंग। बांग्लादेश का उदय। पाकिस्तान की करारी हार।
1972 : भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच शिमला समझौता।
1974 : 18 मई 1974 को पोखरन में परमाणु परीक्षण कर भारत छठी परमाणु ताकत बना।
1975 : प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गाँधी ने देश में आपातकाल की घोषणा की। जयप्रकाश नारायण, जॉर्ज फर्नांडीस और अटलबिहारी वाजपेयी सहित कई विपक्षी नेता गिरफ्तार। प्रेस की आजादी पर प्रतिबंध। भारत के पहले उपग्रह आर्यभट्ट का प्रक्षेपण। फिल्म शोले ने बॉक्स आफिस के सारे कीर्तिमान तोड़े।
1976 : भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच समझौता एक्सप्रेस शुरू।
1977 : कांग्रेस की हार के बाद देश में पहली गैर कांग्रेसी सरकार बनी। आंध्रप्रदेश में समुद्री तूफान 35 हजार की मौत।
1978 : भारत की पहली परखनली शिशु दुर्गा (कनुप्रिया अग्रवाल) का जन्म।
1979 : अनुभव के अभाव में पहली गैर कांग्रेसी सरकार का पतन। वंचितों और पीड़ितों की मदद के लिए मदर टेरेसा को नोबेल पुरस्कार।
1980 : विमान दुर्घटना में संजय गाँधी की अप्रत्याशित मौत। राजीव गाँधी का भारतीय राजनीति में पदार्पण। प्रकाश पादुकोण ने भारत के लिए पहली बार आल इंग्लैंड ओपन बैडमिंटन टूर्नामेंट जीता। मास्को ओलिंपिक में भारत को हॉकी का स्वर्ण।
1981 : टोमोरिल का संश्लेषण कर भारतीय चिकित्सा विज्ञानियों ने बड़ी सफलता हासिल की।
1982 : भारत ने नवें एशियाई खेलों का सफल आयोजन किया। देश में रंगीन टेलीविजन की शुरुआत।
1983 : भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम ने वेस्टइंडीज को हराकर पहली बार विश्वकप जीता। भारत का अपना पहला बहुउद्देश्यीय संचार और मौसम उपग्रह इन्सेट-1बी प्रक्षेपित। मारुति-800 सड़कों पर उतरी।
1984 : ऑपरेशन ब्लू स्टार के तहत आतंकवादियों के सफाए के लिए स्वर्ण मंदिर में सेना का प्रवेश। सिख अंगरक्षक के हाथों प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गाँधी की हत्या। देश भर में सिख विरोधी दंगे। भोपाल में यूनियन कार्बाइड संयंत्र में जहरीली गैस के रिसाव से हजारों की मौत। राकेश शर्मा अंतरिक्ष में जाने वाले पहले भारतीय बने।
1985 : दक्षिण एशियाई क्षेत्रीय सहयोग संगठन की स्थापना। भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम ने ऑस्ट्रेलिया को हराकर विश्व क्रिकेट श्रृंखला जीती। कनाडा के टोरंटो से मुंबई आ रहा एयर इंडिया का विमान 329 यात्रियों के साथ दुर्घटनाग्रस्त।
1986 : नई शिक्षा नीति लागू चेन्नई में एड्स का पहला मामला सामने।
1987 : बोफोर्स तोप सौदे को लेकर राजीव गाँधी दागदार। भारत के पहले ग्रैंडमास्टर विश्वनाथन आनंद विश्व जूनियर शतरंज चैंपियन।
1988 : सतह से सतह पर मार करने वाले पृथ्वी प्रक्षेपास्त का सफल परीक्षण।
1990 : मंडल आयोग की सिफारिशें लागू। देश में केबल और सैटेलाइट टेलीविजन की शुरुआत।
1991 : श्रीपेरूंबदूर में आत्मघाती हमले में राजीव गाँधी की मौत। देश में आर्थिक सुधारों की शुरुआत। देश के पहले सुपर कंप्यूटर परम का निर्माण।
1992 : अयोध्या में विवादित ढाँचा ध्वस्त। शेयर बाजार में हर्षद मेहता का हजारों करोड़ रुपए का घोटाला।
1993 : मुंबई में श्रृंखलाबद्ध बम विस्फोट सैकड़ों की मौत। भारत में निजी विमान सेवा का संचालन शुरू।
1994 : सुष्मिता सेन ने ब्रह्मांड सुंदरी का खिताब जीता। ऐश्वर्य राय विश्व सुंदरी बनीं। पीएसएलवी की सफल उड़ान।
1995 : देश में मोबाइल सेवा शुरू।
1997 : मदर टेरेसा का देहांत। पहली भारतीय महिला अंतरिक्ष यात्री कल्पना चावला कोलंबिया से अंतरिक्ष रवाना।
1998 : भारत ने एक और परमाणु परीक्षण किया। पश्चिमी देशों की भृकुटी तनी।
1999 : भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच शांति वार्ता की कोशिशों के बीच कारगिल में भारत और पाकिस्तान की सेना में फिर टकराव। पाकिस्तान की करारी हार। इंडियन एयरलाइंस का अगवा विमान तीन आतंकवादियों की रिहाई के बाद छोड़ा गया।
2001 : देश के लोकतंत्र के हस्ताक्षर संसद भवन पर आतंकी हमला। गुजरात में भूकंप। हजारों की मौत।
2002 : गोधरा रेलवे स्टेशन पर साबरमती एक्सप्रेस पर हमले के बाद गुजरात में सांप्रदायिक हिंसा। गुजरात के अक्षरधाम मंदिर पर हमला। दिल्ली मेट्रो की शुरुआत।
2003 : अंतरिक्ष यात्रियों को लेकर लौट रहा कोलंबिया दुर्घटनाग्रस्त। कल्पना चावला की मौत।
2004 : सुनामी के कहर से दक्षिण भारत के राज्यों में भीषण तबाही। 35 हजार की मौत। राज्यवर्धनसिंह राठौर ने एथेंस ओलिंपिक की निशानेबाजी स्पर्धा में भारत के लिए पहला व्यक्तिगत रजत जीता।
