Indian National Movement (Phase III)
Third Phase of Indian National Movement (1919 to 1947)
The third phase lasted from 1919 AD to 1947 AD. This movement is considered to be the last phase of the struggle for the independence of the country. During this period, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian National Congress started a movement for the attainment of complete independence.
indigo cultivation
In 1916, Gandhiji established 'Sabarmati Ashram' near Ahmedabad and in April 1917, in Champaran district, Bihar, started a movement against the atrocities on farmers. Hearing the story of Gandhi's struggle in South Africa, many farmers of Champaran (Bihar), among whom Ramchandra Shukla was prominent, invited Gandhiji. Here the European farmers were committing a lot of atrocities on the farmers working in the indigo fields. They had to cultivate indigo on at least 3/20 of the land and sell it at the prices fixed by the indigo.
Khilafat Movement
The 'Khilafat Movement' (1919-1922 AD) was initiated by a majority section of Indian Muslims at the national level. Gandhiji considered this movement suitable for Hindu and Muslim unity and expressed his sympathy towards Muslims. Mahatma Gandhi held the session of 'All India Khilafat Committee' in 1919 AD under his chairmanship. At his behest, the policy of non-cooperation and indigenous was adopted. Between 1918-1919, the 'Khilafat Movement' in India went on gaining momentum with the help of Maulana Muhammad Ali, Shaukat Ali and Abul Kalam Azad.
non cooperation movement
In September 1920, to consider the program of the non-cooperation movement, a 'Session of the Congress General Committee' was organized in Calcutta (present day Kolkata). Lala Lajpat Rai presided over this session. In this session, for the first time, the Congress decided to take direct action against foreign rule in India, boycott the Legislative Councils and start non-cooperation and civil disobedience movement.
Launched on August 1, 1920. The non-cooperation movement got unprecedented success in western India, Bengal and northern India. Many educational institutions like Kashi Vidyapeeth, Bihar Vidyapeeth, Gujarat Vidyapeeth, Banaras Vidyapeeth, Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth and Aligarh Muslim University were established for the study of the students.
Swarajya Party
'Swarajya Party' was founded on January 1, 1923, in Allahabad by Chittaranjan Das and Pandit Motilal Nehru, along with Vithalbhai Patel, Madan Mohan Malviya and Jayakar, leading the transformationists. This party was founded against the Congress. Its president was made Chittaranjan Das and secretary Motilal Nehru. Following were the main objectives of Swarajya Party
The Swarajists made a strategy to contest the elections to the legislatures and criticize the government by reaching the legislatures. The Swarajists believed that by peaceful means they would participate in the elections and establish their control over it by sending more and more of their members to the council.
varsad movementThe 'Versad Andolan' (1923–1924 AD) was conducted in Gujarat under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This movement was conducted in protest against the 'dacoity tax' imposed by the British British government.
Vaikom Satyagraha'Vaikom Satyagraha' (1924–1925 AD) was a type of Gandhian movement. This movement was led by T.K. Madhavan, K. Kelappan and K. P. Keshavamenon. This movement was related to the use of a road near a temple in Travancore.
Kakori scandalIn 1924 AD 'Hindustan Republican Association' was established. Its main workers were Shachindranath Sanyal, Ram Prasad Bismil, Yogesh Chandra Chatterjee, Ashfaqullah Khan and Roshan Singh etc. On August 9, 1925, the revolutionaries of Uttar Pradesh looted a car going to Kakori. This incident later came to be known as 'Kakori Kand'. The main accused in this case were Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqullah Khan, Shachindra Bakshi, Rajendra Lahiri, Chandrashekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh etc. After two years of trial on these leaders, Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqullah Khan were hanged and Bakshi was sentenced to life imprisonment. Under the leadership of Chandrashekhar Azad, 'Hindustan Socialist Republican Association' was established in Delhi's Ferozshah Kotla Maidan on September 1928, whose aim was to establish a 'socialist republic' in India.
Martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and RajguruOn October 30, 1928, Lala Lajpat Rai later died due to being injured in a police lathi charge while demonstrating against the 'Simon Commission' from Lahore. To avenge the death, the revolutionaries of Punjab under the leadership of Bhagat Singh shot and killed Saunders, the then Assistant Police Captain of Lahore, on December 17, 1928.
On April 8, 1929, Batukeshwar Dutt and Bhagat Singh threw a bomb on empty benches in the 'Central Legislative Assembly' in protest against the passing of the 'Public Safety Bill'. The purpose of this bombing was not to kill anyone. They were just repeating the statement of the French revolutionaries that 'the deaf need more noise to tell something'. Since Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt could not be hanged due to this bomb incident, they were linked to 'Saunders murder case' and 'Lahore Conspiracy'. On March 23, 1931, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were hanged.
Simon CommissionThe 'Simon Commission' was appointed by the British Prime Minister under the leadership of Sir John Simon. The commission consisted of seven members, all of whom were nominated members of the British Parliament. This was the reason why it was called 'White Commission'. The Simon Commission was announced on November 8, 1927. The commission was to examine whether India was capable of giving constitutional rights to the people here. No Indian was included in this commission, due to which there was a lot of opposition to it.
Nehru CommitteeNehru Committee was formed on 28 February 1928 AD. After the boycott of the 'Simon Commission', India Secretary Lord Burkan Head put a challenge before the Indians to prepare such a constitution and place it before the British Parliament, which would get the support of all the parties. Congress accepted this challenge of Burkan Head. Pandit Motilal Nehru was made the chairman of this committee. Other members of the committee included Sir Ali Imam, M.S. Ane, Tej Bahadur Sapru, Mangal Singh, G.R. Pradhan, Shoaib Qureshi, Subhash Chandra Bose, N.M. Joshi and G.P. Principal etc.
Jinnah's Fourteen SutrasThe demand letter containing 'Fourteen Sutras of Jinnah' was presented in 1929 AD. Muhammad Ali Jinnah was the President of the Muslim League and he was dissatisfied with the 'Nehru Report' submitted by the 'Nehru Committee'. This was the reason why he rejected the report. The Sikh community was also dissatisfied with the 'Nehru Report'. The Muslim League presented Jinnah's Fourteen Points Charter in March, 1929 as an alternative to the Nehru Report, which is called 'Jinnah's Fourteen Sutras'.
Bardoli SatyagrahaBardoli Satyagraha' was the most organized, comprehensive and successful movement of 'Indian National Movement' from 1922 AD. Later it was led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. In the Bardoli taluk of Surat (Gujarat) in 1920 AD, a movement of non-payment of 'Lagaan' was started by the farmers. On the success of the movement, the women there gave Patel the title of 'Sardar'.
Gandhi's eleven point demandGandhiji presented an 11-point proposal in front of Lord Irwin and Ramsay Macdonald on 31 January 1930, which was as follows-
- Revaluation of the rupee The reduction in the exchange rate is one shilling 4 pence.
- Prohibition should be enforced.
- Finish by putting on salt.
- There should be a 50 percent reduction in military expenditure.
- The number of government officials getting higher salaries should be reduced.
- Special import tax should be imposed on foreign cloth.
- The Coast Tax Bill should be introduced.
- All political prisoners should be released.
- The intelligence department should be abolished.
- Indians should be given the right to bear arms for self-defense.
- Land revenue should be made 1/2.
Mahatma Gandhi said that if the demands were not accepted by March 12, 1930, then he would violate the salt law. The government did not take any positive stand on the above demand letter of Gandhiji. As a result of this, it was decided to launch 'Civil Disobedience Movement' under the leadership of Gandhiji in a meeting of Congress in Sabarmati on 14 February 1930.
Civil disobedience movementMahatma Gandhi launched the Civil Disobedience Movement on 6 April 1930 to emphasize this demand. The purpose of which was to bow down to the British government by doing some specific types of illegal acts collectively.
Dandi MarchDandi Yatra was started by Gandhiji and his volunteers on March 12, 1930. Its main objective was to 'break the salt law' made by the British. Gandhiji along with his 78 volunteers, including Web Miller was one, 358 km from Sabarmati Ashram. Depart for Dandi located far away. After reaching Dandi on April 6, 1930, about 24 days later, he broke the salt law on the beach. Subhash Chandra Bose has written about Gandhiji's Dandi Yatra- "The Dandi March of Mahatmaji can be compared to the 'Paris March' of the Nepalese on his return from 'Ilba' and Mussolini's 'Rome March' to get political power. can." This policy of non-cooperation spread all around, the British British rule was badly angered. Gandhiji was arrested on May 5, 1930.
Gandhi-Irwin PactGandhi-Irwin Pact' was signed on March 5, 1931. This agreement between Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Irwin is also known as 'Delhi Pact'. Gandhiji gave great importance to this agreement, while Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose strongly criticized it. The Congressmen were also completely dissatisfied with this agreement, because Gandhiji could not save India's young revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev from the noose.
The terms of this agreement were as follows-
- The confiscated property of Congress and its workers should be returned.
- All ordinances and cases of incomplete prosecutions should be withdrawn by the government.
- All political prisoners should be freed except those accused in violent acts.
- Peaceful dharna should be allowed at opium, liquor and foreign cloth shops.
- People living on the shores of the sea should be allowed to make and collect salt.
The 'Round Table Conference' was held in London between 1930 and 1932. This conference was organized on the basis of the announcement of the then Viceroy Lord Irwin on August 31, 1929. In this conference, Lord Irwin proposed a 'Round Table Conference' in London for the creation of a new constitution of India after the report of the Simon Commission was published. In November 1931, a 'Round Table Conference' was organized in London, in which representatives of all political parties of India and England were invited. This conference was presided over by the then Prime Minister of England, Ramsay MacDonald and organized three conferences-
Poona Pact
Poona Pact' was done on 24 September 1932 AD. This agreement was done on the bed of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi. By the 'Communal Decision' of British Prime Minister Ramsay Macdonald, separate representation was provided not only to Muslims but also to separate Dalit caste Hindus from upper caste Hindus.
Pakistan's demand
Presiding over the 'Lahore session' of the Muslim League, Muhammad Ali Jinnah demanded a separate Muslim nation Pakistan from India on March 23, 1940.
forward block
A new party named 'Forward Bloc' was formed by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in April, 1939 AD. In the 'Haripura session' of the 'Indian National Congress', on February 19, 1938, Subhash Chandra Bose was elected president. In the 'Tripura session' of the Congress, Subhash Chandra Bose was re-elected the President of the Congress, but due to Gandhi's opposition, he resigned and in April, 1939, a new party named 'Forward Bloc' was formed. It is noteworthy that after the resignation of Subhash Chandra Bose, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was made the President of Congress.
cripps offer
The 'Cripps proposal' was presented on 30 March 1942 AD. The capture of Rangoon (present-day Yangon) by the Japanese forces in 1942 posed a direct threat to the frontier areas of India. Now Britain sent Stafford Cripps, a member of the wartime cabinet, to India with a draft of the declaration to get India's active cooperation in the war. The Cripps resolutions were indicating the contours of the partition of India, so the Indian National Congress rejected the provision of interim management, planning for defence, and the right of the provinces to self-determination.
Quit India Movement
Quit India Movement was started on 9th August, 1942 AD on the call of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi all over India. In the history related to the independence of India, two phases appear to be the most important - the first 'Freedom War of 1857 AD' and the second 'Quit India Movement of 1942 AD'. It was a big 'civil disobedience movement' by Mahatma Gandhi against the British rule to get India's independence soon. After the failure of 'Cripps Mission', Gandhiji had decided to start another big movement. This movement was named 'Quit India Movement'.
cabinet mission
In Britain, on July 26, 1945, the British cabinet under the leadership of Clement Attlee assumed power. Prime Minister Attlee announced the establishment of the Constituent Assembly of India on February 15, 1946 and to send a 'Cabinet Mission' to India to discuss with the Indians on the then burning problems.
The Mountbatten Plan
On March 24, 1947, Lord Mount Batten came as the Viceroy of India. As soon as he took office, he discussed the immediate problems with the leaders of 'Congress' and 'Muslim League'. The 'Muslim League' did not agree on any option other than Pakistan. Mount Baton requested the Congress to accept the bitter truth of the partition of the country. The Congress leaders also felt the pressure of the circumstances and agreed to accept this truth.
After accepting the 'Mountbatten Plan', preparations for the partition of the country started. The division of districts in Bengal and Punjab and the determination of boundaries was entrusted under a commission, which was headed by 'Radcliffe'. That is why the dividing line between India and Pakistan was called Radcliffe Line. After the partition, on August 15, 1947, two new nations named India and Pakistan came into existence. Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of independent India and Lord Mount Batten became the first Governor-General and the Governor-General of Pakistan was Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the Prime Minister Liaquat Ali.
Indian National Movement (Phase III) ||
Indian National Movement (Phase II)
The second phase of the movement (1905-1919 AD)
In this phase of the Indian national movement, militant movements were launched on the one hand and revolutionary movements on the other. Both were fighting for the sole objective, liberation from British rule and attainment of complete independence. On the one hand, the people of the extremist ideology were fighting on the basis of 'boycott movement' and on the other hand the people of the revolutionary ideology wanted to get freedom by using bombs and guns. While the extremists believed in peaceful active political movements, the revolutionaries believed in the use of force and violence to drive the British out of India.
The neglectful policy adopted by the British government towards the demands of the Congress continuously agitated the young leaders of the Congress, such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal. These young leaders did not put any faith in the political begging of the liberal leaders. He stressed on the need to take drastic steps to get their demands fulfilled by the government.
Revolutionary Movement Abroad
Established the 'Interim Government of India' in December 1915 with the help of Germany.
In February 1905, 'Indian Home Rule Society' was established outside India by Shyamji Krishna Varma on the soil of London. It is called 'India House'. Abdullah Suharwardy was its vice-president. The 'Indian Home Rule Society' also brought out a magazine called 'Indian Sociologist'. Soon the 'India House' became the center of movement for the Indians living in London. Other members of this organization were Lala Hardayal, Madan Lal Dhingra, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar etc.
In 1913 AD, many Indian people founded 'Ghadar Party' in San Francisco (America) under the leadership of Lala Hardayal. Its president was Sohan Singh. Lala Hardayal was the secretary of the propaganda department of this party. This organization established 'Yugantar Press' and edited the weekly (later monthly) paper named 'Gadar' from 1st November, 1913. This newspaper was brought out in Hindi, Gurmukhi, Urdu and Gujarati languages.
Establishment of Muslim League
On October 1, 1906, H.H. A group of Muslims under the leadership of Aga Khan met the Viceroy Lord Minto at Shimla. The Principal Archbold of Aligarh College was the father of this delegation. This delegation requested the Viceroy to make arrangements for separate communal elections for Muslims for provincial, central and local elections. The British high officials were behind the sending of this delegation. Minto fully supported their demands. As a result of which Muslim leaders founded the 'Muslim League' in Dhaka on 30 December 1906 AD under the leadership of Nawab Salimulla of Dhaka.
Marley Minto Improvements
When Lord Minto became the governor of India, then the whole of India was slowly moving towards political unrest. The then India Secretary John Marley and the Viceroy Lord Minto passed the 'Indian Councils Act, 1909' of reforms, which was called 'Marley Minto Reforms'. The bill was passed on 25 May and came into force on 15 November 1909 after state approval. Under this Act, the size and power of the Central and Provincial Legislatures were increased.
sedition assembly act
Reacting strongly to the Marley Minto reforms, the extremist organizations intensified their revolutionary activities, as a result of which the British government passed the 'Sedition Assembly Act' in 1911 AD and arrested the leaders of the extremist party Lala Lajpat Rai and Ajit Singh. Tried to crush the movement.
Delhi Darbar
In 1911 itself, a grand court was organized in Delhi to welcome the Emperor George V of England and Queen Mary. The Viceroy of India at that time was Lord Hardinge. In this court, the annulment of the partition of Bengal was announced and at the same time a separate province was formed by merging the Bengali speaking areas. An announcement was made to transfer the capital from Calcutta to Delhi, although the formal transfer of the capital to Delhi was possible only in 1912 AD.
kamagatamaru episode
The Kamagatamaru episode happened in 1914 AD. Under this episode, the Government of Canada completely banned those Indians from entering Canada who did not come to Canada directly from India. The Kamagatamaru ship, which was carrying 376 passengers, was denied entry into Canada. When this ship reached 'Yakohama', then before that the First World War started. After this, when the ship reached 'Bajabaz', there were clashes between the passengers and the police. In this 18 passengers were killed and the rest were thrown in jail. Hussain Rahim, Sohan Lal Pathak and Balwant Singh established 'Shor Committee' (Coastal Committee) to fight the battle of these travelers.
Congress session Lucknow
The Lucknow session of Congress was held in Lucknow in 1916 AD under the chairmanship of Ambikacharan Majumdar. It was in this session itself that the extremists and the moderates, whose differences had split the Congress into two, were brought together again. A resolution for 'Swarajya Aapti' was also passed in the Lucknow session. The Congress also accepted the demand for 'communal representation' being made by the 'Muslim League'.
Home Rule League Movement
The objective of the 'Home Rule League Movement' was to achieve self-government in a constitutional way while living under the British Empire. The prominent leaders of this league were Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Mrs. Annie Besant. For the attainment of Swarajya, Tilak had founded the 'Home Rule League' in Belgaum on April 28, 1916. The influence of the league founded by him was extended to Karnataka, Maharashtra (except Bombay), Central Provinces and Berar.
Montagu-Chelmsford Report
A resolution was read by India's Secretary Montagu in the 'Commons Assembly' of Britain on August 20, 1917, in which it was said that Indians should be given more representation in every branch of administration in India. This was called the 'Montague Declaration'. The Montagu Declaration was called the 'Magna Carta of India' by the liberals. In November 1917, Montagu came to India and here he released the 'Montague-Chelmsford Report' in 1919 AD after extensive consultation with the then Viceroy Lord Chelmsford. Montagu called the 'Government of India Act 1919', based on the 'Montague Declaration' and the 'Montague-Chelmsford Report', as a bridge between the government created by the Parliament and the people's representatives of India. This act, popularly known as the 'Government of India Act' of 1919 AD, provided for 'dual government' in the provinces.
In 1918, under the leadership of Surendranath Banerjee, the liberal leaders welcomed the Montagu reforms and separated from the Congress and established the 'All India Liberal Union'. The constitutional reform of the 1919 AD session came into force in 1921 AD. Under this Act, the provincial subjects were divided into reserved and transferred subjects for the first time. For the first time, the Indian Legislature got the right to pass the budget and for the first time, provision was made for the establishment of 'Public Service Commission'. There was a provision for the appointment of a statutory commission to review the Act of 1919 AD after ten years, later this commission was known as 'Simon Commission'.
Rowlatt Act
Rowlatt Act was implemented on March 8, 1919. To end the influence of the revolutionaries in India and crush the national sentiment, the British Government appointed a committee under the chairmanship of Judge 'Sir Sidney Rowlatt'. The committee presented its report in 1918 AD. On the basis of the suggestions given by the committee, two bills were brought in the Central Legislature in February, 1919. After their passage, these bills came to be known as the Rowlatt Act or the Black Law.
Jallianwala Bagh Massacre
In the Amritsar city of Punjab, at a place called Jallianwala Bagh, British forces opened fire on Indian protesters indiscriminately and killed them in large numbers. This incident happened on April 13, 1919 AD. After this incident Mahatma Gandhi started the 'Non-cooperation Movement' of 1920-1922. That day was the festival of Vaisakhi. In 1919, the British government of India had already arrested the mass leaders for peacefully opposing the Rowlatt Act. A peaceful meeting was organized in Jallianwala Bagh to condemn this arrest and to condemn the earlier firing incident. On April 13, 1919, more than ten thousand unarmed women, men and children gathered for a protest meeting at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, despite the ban on holding public meetings.
Hunter Committee
The Hunter Committee was established by the British Government on October 1, 1919. Lord Hunter was appointed as the chairman of this committee. Forced by the fierce demonstrations in the country regarding the massacre of Jallianwala Bagh, the British government set up 'Hunter Committee' to investigate the incident. This committee tried to cover up the entire issue of Jallianwala Bagh. In British newspapers, General Dyer, who was responsible for the incident, was addressed as 'protector of the British Empire' and 'Lion of the British Empire' etc.
Indian National Movement (Phase II) ||
Indian National Movement (Phase I)
The First Phase of the Movement (1885–1905)
With the establishment of the Indian National Congress in 1885, it was dominated by liberal national leaders. Prominent among the liberal nationalist leaders of the time were- Dadabhai Naoroji, Mahadev Govind Ranade, Ferozshah Mehta, Surendranath Banerjee, Dinsha Vacha, Vyomesh Chandra Banerjee, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Madan Mohan Malviya etc. In the first 20 years of the establishment of the Congress, its policy was very liberal, so this period is considered as the 'period of liberal nationalism' in the history of Congress. The founding members of Congress wished for the absence of discrimination of religion and caste, equality of human beings, equality before the law, expansion of civil liberties and development of representative institutions for Indians. Liberal leaders believed that only by adopting constitutional methods, we can liberate the country.
Congress demands
At this time the Congress was influenced by the rich, middle class, intellectuals, which included lawyers, doctors, engineers, journalists and litterateurs. The liberal leaders had complete allegiance to the justice of the British and they considered the British as their friend not their enemy. These leaders used to put their demands in front of the government through applications, reports, reminder letters and delegations. During this period, the Congress did not demand the independence of the country, but demanded some concessions. The main demands of the Congress were as follows-
All these demands were presented in constitutional ways in the form of pleadings in inferior terms. Due to this flexibility and agile behavior, extremist leaders like Lokmanya Tilak called it 'political begging'.
propaganda in england
AO Leaders like Hume, Dadabhai Naoroji and Vanderburn etc. believed that the 'Indian National Congress' could be promoted more than England. In 1887, Dadabhai Naoroji established the 'Indian Reform Committee' in England. In 1888, Naoroji founded the 'Indian League' under the chairmanship of William Digby. In 1889, the 'British Committee' of the Congress was formed, which published a monthly magazine named 'India'. Through this the citizens of England were made aware of the status quo of India. Congress sent its delegation to Britain from time to time to solve the problems of Indians. In 1890, Surendranath Banerjee, Vyomesh Chandra Banerjee, A. O. Hume was involved. 1899 AD Bipin Chandra Pal went to England. The result of these efforts was that a group sympathetic to the problems of the Indian public was formed in England.
Bengal Partition
The total population of Bengal at the time of partition was 7 crore, 85 lakhs and at this time Bengal included Bihar, Orissa and Bangladesh. The Bengal Presidency was the largest of all the Presidencies at that time. In 1874, Assam was separated from Bengal. A lieutenant governor was unable to give efficient administration to such a large province. The then Governor-General Lord Curzon attributed administrative inconvenience to the partition of Bengal, but the real reason was not administrative but political. The Swadeshi and Boycott Movement was launched in protest against Curzon's 'Partition of Bengal'. Bengal was at that time the focal point of Indian national consciousness and at the same time there was a strong political awakening among Bengalis, to crush which Curzon sought to divide Bengal. He wanted the Bengali speaking Hindus to be in minority in both the parts.
Indian National Movement
The Indian National Movement was a major national movement in 'Indian History' for a long time. The formal beginning of this movement was with the establishment of the Congress in 1885, which continued till August 15, 1947, with some ups and downs. The year 1857 is considered to be the beginning of the rise of Indian nationalism. National literature and economic exploitation of the country also contributed significantly to the awakening of nationalism. The national movement of India can be divided into three parts-
Phase I (till 1885-1905 AD)
The 'Indian National Congress' was established during this period, but by this time its goal was completely unclear. At that time this movement was represented by the less educated, intelligent middle class people. This class was influenced by the liberal and extremist ideology of the West.
Phase II (from 1905 to 1919 AD)
By this time the 'Indian National Congress' had become quite mature and its aims and objectives had become clear. From this platform of the National Congress, efforts were started for the social, economic, political and cultural development of the Indian people. During this time, some militant-minded organizations also used the revolutionary method of the West to end British imperialism.
In this phase of the movement, extremist movements were launched on the one hand and revolutionary movements on the other.
Third and final phase (from 1919 to 1947 AD)
During this period, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the Congress started a movement for the attainment of complete independence.
the rise of nationalism
The year 1857 AD is considered to be the beginning of the rise of Indian nationalism. The following reasons were responsible for its rise-
Western Education and Culture
Western education and culture played an important role in awakening the nationalist sentiment. The British did not educate Indians because they did not want the feeling of nationalism in them. Their purpose was to fulfill the need of clerks for British administration and business firms, but it proved to be the misfortune of the British that Indians got an opportunity to hear the views of prominent thinkers like Burke, Mill, Gladstone, Bright and Lord Macaulay and Milter, I had the privilege of reading the poems of great poets like Shelley, Byron, who were themselves battling the barbaric policies of Britain and to know the thoughts of people like Voltaire, Rousseau, Mazzini. In this way, due to the influence of western education, nationalist feelings started growing among the people. In 1833, English was made the medium of instruction. relations with western countries, western literature, science,
rise of nationalism
Newspapers and the press have played an important role in the rise of nationalism. Raja Rammohun Roy laid the foundation of the 'National Press' in India. He made the first effort towards political awakening in India by editing papers like 'Samvad Kaumudi' in Bangla language and 'Mirat-ul-Akhbar' in Persian. In 1859, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar edited the weekly paper 'Som Prakash' full of nationalist sentiments. Apart from this, Bangdoot, Amrit Bazar Patrika, Kesari, Hindu, Pioneer, Maratha, Indian Mirror, etc., aroused the feeling of nationalism among Indians by criticizing the wrong policies of the British government.
national literature
National literature is also responsible for the origin of nationalist sentiment. Bhartendu Harishchandra, the father of modern Hindi, has mentioned the aggressive policy of the British towards India in his play 'Bharat plight' written in 1876 AD. Apart from Harishchandra, Pratap Narayan Mishra, Balkrishna Bhatt, Badrinarayan Chaudhary also come in this area, whose compositions were filled with the spirit of patriotism. The feeling of love in the country is found in the writings of Muhammad Hussain, Altap Hussain in Urdu literature, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in Bengali, Chiplukar in Marathi, Narmada in Gujarati, Subrahmanyam Bharati in Tamil, etc.
economic exploitation of the country
The economic exploitation of the country by the British also contributed significantly to the awakening of nationalism. Dadabhai Naoroji explained the principle of extortion of wealth and drew a blueprint for the exploitation of the British. The anti-India economic policy of the British aroused the hatred of foreign state and love for indigenous goods and state in the minds of Indians. The culmination of India's economic exploitation is seen during the reign of Lord Lytton.
other reason
Before the British came to India, there was a lack of political integration here. After the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, the Indian border was fragmented, but the establishment of the British Empire led to political integration in India. The development of rapid transport and communication means of rail, post and telegram also strengthened the root of nationalism in India. Railways played a major role in this. Edwin Arnold has written that- "Railways will do that work for India, which great dynasties have never done before, which Akbar could not do by his kindness and Tipu Sultan by his fierceness, he could not make India a nation. " The intellectual renaissance played an important role in the rise of nationalism. Raja Rammohan Roy, Dayanand Saraswati, Swami Vivekananda etc. shook the conscience of Indians. In this context, Dayanand Saraswati said that- "The indigenous state is paramount and best". European scholars Sir William Jones, Monier Williams, Max Muller, William Roth, Samson, MacDonald etc. introduced everyone to the ancient cultural heritage of India through researches and it certainly disappeared from the mind of Indians. Self-respect and self-confidence were awakened in them, which encouraged the spirit of patriotism and nationalism in them. The discriminatory policy adopted by the British towards Indians everywhere in the army, industry, government jobs and economic sector also gave birth to nationalism. Lord Lytton's reactionary actions, such as the Delhi Durbar, Vernacular Press Act, Arms Act, reducing the age of the Indian Civil Service (Indian Administrative Service) from 21 to 19 years, the Second Anglo-Afghan War, etc. paved the way for the rise of nationalism. paved. Establishment of Indian National Congress
It was at this time that Hume consulted the then Viceroy Lord Dufferin and it is believed that the 'Indian National Congress' was Dufferin's brainchild. Dufferin also wanted the Indian politicians to meet once a year, where they would express their genuine feelings towards the government through the faults of the administration's actions and suggestions for their redressal, so that the administration would be alert to any event that might happen in the future. Hume agreed with Dufferin's plan. Before the establishment of this organization, Hume went to England, where he discussed this subject extensively with politicians like Lord Ripon, Lord Dalhousie, John Wright and Slag. Before coming to India, Hume established an 'India Parliamentary Committee' with the aim of creating interest among the members of the British Parliament towards Indian problems in England. On his arrival in India, Hume held a meeting of the 'Indian National Union' in Bombay on 25 December, In 1885 AD, where after extensive deliberations the name of 'Indian National Union' was changed to 'Indian National Congress' or 'Indian National Congress'. This is where this institution was born. Earlier its conference was to be held in Poona, but due to the outbreak of cholera, the conference was organized in Bombay after changing the location.
