वैदिक सभ्यता
सिंधु सभ्यता के पतन के बाद जो नवीन संस्कृति प्रकाश में आयी उसके विषय में हमें सम्पूर्ण जानकारी वेदों से मिलती है। इसलिए इस काल को हम 'वैदिक काल' अथवा वैदिक सभ्यता के नाम से जानते हैं। चूँकि इस संस्कृति के प्रवर्तक आर्य लोग थे इसलिए कभी-कभी आर्य सभ्यता का नाम भी दिया जाता है। यहाँ आर्य शब्द का अर्थ- श्रेष्ठ, उदात्त, अभिजात्य, कुलीन, उत्कृष्ट, स्वतंत्र आदि हैं। यह काल 1500 ई.पू. से 600 ई.पू. तक अस्तित्व में रहा।वैदिक सभ्यता का नाम ऐसा इस लिए पड़ा कि वेद उस काल की जानकारी का प्रमुख स्रोत हैं। वेद चार है - ऋग्वेद, सामवेद, अथर्ववेद और यजुर्वेद। इनमें से ऋग्वेद की रचना सबसे पहले हुई थी। ऋग्वेद में ही गायत्री मन्त्र है जो सविता(सूर्य) को समर्पित है।
ऋग्वैदिक काल 1500-1000 ई.पू.
ऋग्वैदिक काल के अध्ययन के लिए दो प्रकार के साक्ष्य उपलब्ध हैं-
पुरातात्विक साक्ष्य
इसके अंतर्गत निम्नलिखित साक्ष्य उपलब्ध प्राप्त हुए हैं-
साहित्यिक साक्ष्य
ऋग्वेद में 10 मण्डल एवं 1028 मण्डल सूक्त है। पहला एवं दसवाँ मण्डल बाद में जोड़ा गया है जबकि दूसरा से 7वाँ मण्डल पुराना है।
प्रशासनिक इकाई
प्रशासन की सबसे छोटी इकाई कुल थी। एक कुल में एक घर में एक छत के नीचे रहने वाले लोग शामिल थे। एक ग्राम कई कुलों से मिलकर बना होता था। ग्रामों का संगठन विश् कहलाता था और विशों का संगठन जन। कई जन मिलकर राष्ट्र बनाते थे।ऋग्वैदिक भारत का राजनीतिक ढाँचा आरोही क्रम में- कुल > ग्राम > विशस > जन > राष्ट्र
धर्म
ऋग्वैदिक काल में प्राकृतिक शक्तियों की ही पूजा की जाती थी और कर्मकांडों की प्रमुखता नहीं थी। ऋग्वैदिक काल धर्म की॑ अन्य विशेषताएं • क्रत्या, निऋति, यातुधान, ससरपरी आदि के रूप मे अपकरी शक्तियो अर्थात, भूत-प्रेत, राछसों, पिशाच एवं अप्सराओ का जिक्र दिखाई पडता है।
आर्थिक जीवन
वैदिक आर्यो ने पशुपालन को ही अपना मुख्य व्यवसाय बनाया था। ऋग्वैदिक सभ्यता ग्रामीण सभ्यता थी। इस वेद में ‘गव्य एवं गव्यति शब्द चारागाह के लिए प्रयुक्त है। इस काल में गाय का प्रयोग मुद्रा के रूप मे भी होता था। अवि (भेड़), अजा (बकरी) का ऋग्वेद में अनेक बार ज़िक्र हुआ है। हाथी, बाघ, बतख,गिद्ध से आर्य लोग अपरिचित थे। धनी व्यक्ति को गोपत कहा गया था। राजा को गोपति कहा जाता था युद्ध के लिए गविष्ट, गेसू, गव्य ओर गम्य शब्द प्रचलित थे। समय की माप के लिए गोधुल शब्द का प्रयोग किया जाता था। दूरी का मान के लिए गवयतु।
न्याय व्यवस्था
न्याय व्यवस्था धर्म पर आधारित होती थी। राजा क़ानूनी सलाहकारों तथा पुरोहित की सहायता से न्याय करता था। चोरी, डकैती, राहजनी, आदि अनेक अपराधों का उल्लेख मिलता है। इसमें पशुओं की चोरी सबसे अधिक होती थी जिसे पणि लोग करते थे। पुत्र प्राप्ति हेतु देवताओं से कामना की जाती थी और परिवार संयुक्त होता था।
उत्तर वैदिक काल
उत्तर वैदिक काल (1000-600 ई.पू.) भारतीय इतिहास में उस काल को, जिसमें सामवेद, यजुर्वेद एवं अथर्ववेद तथा ब्राह्मण ग्रंथों, आरण्यकों एवं उपनिषद की रचना हुई, को उत्तर वैदिक काल कहा जाता है।

अथर्ववेद
ब्राह्मण
दिक मन्त्रों तथा संहिताओं को ब्रह्म कहा गया है | वही ब्रह्म का विस्तारितरुपको ब्राह्मण कहा गया है। पुरातन ब्राह्मण में ऐतरेय, शतपथ, पंचविश, तैतरीय आदि विशेष महत्वपूर्ण हैं। महर्षि याज्ञवल्क्यने मन्त्र सहित ब्राह्मण ग्रंथों की उपदेश आदित्यसे प्राप्त किया है।
संहिताओं के अन्तर्गत कर्मकांड की जो विधि उपदिष्ट है ब्राह्मण मे उसी की सप्रमाण व्याख्या देखने को मिलता है। प्राचीन परम्परा मे आश्रमानुरुप वेदों का पाठ करने की विधि थी। अतः ब्रह्मचारी ऋचाओं ही पाठ करते थे ,गृहस्थ ब्राह्मणों का, वानप्रस्थ आरण्यकों और संन्यासी उपनिषदों का। गार्हस्थ्यधर्म का मननीय वेदभाग ही ब्राह्मण है। यह मुख्यतः गद्य शैली में उपदिष्ट है। ब्राह्मण ग्रंथों से हमें बिम्बिसार के पूर्व की घटना का ज्ञान प्राप्त होता है।सर्वाधिक परवर्ती ब्राह्मण गोपथ है।
आरण्यक
आरण्यक वेदों का वह भाग है जो गृहस्थाश्रम त्याग उपरान्त वानप्रस्थ लोग जंगल में पाठ किया करते थे | इसी कारण आरण्यक नामकरण किया गया।
उपनिषद
उपनिषद प्राचीनतम दार्शनिक विचारों का संग्रह है।
वेदांग
युगान्तर में वैदिक अध्ययन के लिए छः विधाओं (शाखाओं) का जन्म हुआ जिन्हें ‘वेदांग’ कहते हैं। वेदांग का शाब्दिक अर्थ है वेदों का अंग, तथापि इस साहित्य के पौरूषेय होने के कारण श्रुति साहित्य से पृथक ही गिना जाता है। वेदांग को स्मृति भी कहा जाता है, क्योंकि यह मनुष्यों की कृति मानी जाती है। वेदांग सूत्र के रूप में हैं इसमें कम शब्दों में अधिक तथ्य रखने का प्रयास किया गया है। वेदांग की संख्या 6 है
सूत्र साहित्य
सूत्र साहित्य वैदिक साहित्य का अंग है। उसे समझने में सहायक भी है।
ब्रह्म सूत्र-भगवान विष्णु के अवतार भगवान श्रीवेद व्यास ने वेदांत पर यह परमगूढ़ ग्रंथ लिखा है।
कल्प सूत्र- ऐतिहासिक दृष्टि से सर्वाधिक महत्वपूर्ण। वेदों का हस्त स्थानीय वेदांग।
श्रोत सूत्र- महायज्ञ से सम्बंधित विस्तृत विधि-विधानों की व्याख्या। वेदांग कल्पसूत्र का पहला भाग।
स्मार्तसूत्र षोडश संस्कारों का विधान करने वाला कल्प का दुसरा भाग
शुल्बसूत्र- यज्ञ स्थल तथा अग्निवेदी के निर्माण तथा माप से सम्बंधित नियम इसमें हैं। इसमें भारतीय ज्यामिति का प्रारम्भिक रूप दिखाई देता है। कल्प का तीसरा भाग।
धर्म सूत्र- इसमें सामाजिक धार्मिक कानून तथा आचार संहिता है। कल्प का चौथा भाग
गृह्य सूत्र- परुवारिक संस्कारों, उत्सवों तथा वैयक्तिक यज्ञों से सम्बंधित विधि-विधानों की चर्चा है।
Vedic Civilization
After the decline of the Indus civilization, we get complete information about the new culture that came to light from the Vedas. That is why we know this period as 'Vedic period' or Vedic civilization. Since the originator of this culture was the Aryan people, hence the name Aryan civilization is also sometimes given. Here the meaning of the word Arya is superior, sublime, elite, noble, excellent, independent etc. This period is 1500 BC. to 600 BC remained in existence till
Vedic civilization got its name because the Vedas are the main source of information about that period. There are four Vedas – Rigveda, Samveda, Atharvaveda and Yajurveda. Of these, the Rigveda was the first to be composed. There is Gayatri Mantra in Rigveda which is dedicated to Savita (Sun).
Rigvedic period 1500-1000 BC

archaeological evidence
Under this, the following evidence has been received:
1. painted gray pot
2. In excavation, a 13-room house was found at Bhagwan Pura near Haryana and three such sites found in Punjab, which are related to the Rigvedic period.
3. Bogaz-koi inscription / Mitalpi inscription (1400 BC - This inscription mentions the Vedic gods Indra, Mitra, Varuna and Nasatya as a witness to the treaty between the Hittite king Shubviluliyum and the Mittani king Mattiuaja.
literary evidence
There are 10 Mandalas and 1028 Mandala Suktas in Rigveda. The first and tenth mandals were added later while the second to seventh mandals are older.
administrative unit
The smallest unit of administration was the total. A clan consisted of people living under one roof in a house. A village was made up of several clans. The organization of villages was called Vish and the organization of Vish was called Jan. Many peoples combined to form a nation. Political structure of Rigvedic India in ascending order- Kul > Village > Visas > Jana > Nation
Religion
In the Rigvedic period, only natural forces were worshipped and rituals were not prominent. Other features of Rigvedic period religion • In the form of kratya, niruti, yatudhan, sasarpari, etc., there is a mention of evil powers, ie, ghosts, demons, vampires and apsaras.
economic life
The Vedic Aryans made animal husbandry their main occupation. The Rigvedic civilization was a rural civilization. In this Veda the words 'Gavya and Gavyati' are used for pasture. Cow was also used as currency during this period. Avi (sheep), Aja (goat) are mentioned many times in Rigveda. The Aryans were unfamiliar with elephants, tigers, ducks, vultures. The rich man was called Gopat. The king was called Gopati, the words Gavishta, Gesu, Gavya and Gamya were prevalent for the war. The word Godhul was used to measure time. Gvaytu for the value of the distance.
Judicial system
The judicial system was based on religion. The king used to do justice with the help of legal advisors and priests. Many crimes like theft, dacoity, rahajani, etc. are mentioned. In this the theft of animals was the highest, which was done by the Pani people. Deities were prayed for to get a son and the family was united.

Later Vedic period (1000-600 BC) In Indian history, the period in which Samaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda and Brahmanical texts, Aranyakas and Upanishads were composed, is called the later Vedic period.
Vedic literature
1. The four Vedas and their Samhitas, the Brahmanas, the Aranyakas, the Upanishads and the Vedangas are included in the Vedic literature.
2. There are four Vedas – Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda.
3. Rigveda, Samveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda are the world's first authentic texts.
4. The Vedas are called Apaurusheya. The Vedas have been given the name of "Shruti" because of the Guru being able to memorize the disciples orally.
Rigveda
1. Rigveda is a collection of compositions related to the praise of the gods.
2. It is divided into 10 mandals. In this, the circles from 2 to 7 are considered to be the oldest. The first and tenth circles were added later. It has 1028 hymns.
3. Its language is poetic.
4. The Rigveda mentions 33 gods (substances with divine qualities).
5. The famous Gayatri Mantra, which is addressed to the goddess Gayatri, related to the Sun, appears first in the Rigveda.
6. The sentence 'Asato Ma Sadgamaya' is taken from Rigveda.
7. In Rigveda, the names of women are also found in reciting the mantra, the main ones are- Lopamudra, Ghosha, Shachi, Poulomi and Kakshavriti etc.
8. Its priest's name is Hotri.
Yajurveda
1.Yaju means sacrifice.
2. The methods of sacrifice are described in Yajurveda Veda.
3. In this, the compilation of mantras has been done for the purpose of reciting the bed at the time of ritual sacrifice.
4. In this, along with mantras, there is also a description of religious rituals, which have been suggested to be performed with chanting.
5. The language of Yajurveda is both poetic and prose.
6. Yajurveda has two branches- Krishna Yajurveda and Shukla Yajurveda.
7. There are four branches of Krishna Yajurveda - Maitrayani Samhita, Kathak Samhita, Kapinthal and Samhita. There are two branches of Shukla Yajurveda – Madhyandin and Kanva Samhita.
8. It is divided into 40 chapters.
9. In this book, for the first time, two state functions like Rajasuya and Vajpeya are mentioned.
Samaveda
The Samaveda was composed to make the mantras given in the Rigveda sungable.
1. It has 1810 verses in which all except 75 are mentioned in Rigveda.
2. The Samaveda is divided into three branches – Kauthum, Ranayaniya and Jaimaniya.
3. Samaveda has the distinction of being the first musical book of India.
atharvaveda
1. It depicts the basic beliefs, traditions of the pre-historic era. Atharvaveda is organized into 20 chapters. It has 731 hymns and about 6000 mantras.
2. In this information is given in the form of disease and its means of prevention.
3. There are two branches of Atharvaveda – Saunaka and Pippalada.
Brahmin
Dik Mantras and Samhitas are called Brahma. That expanded form of Brahma is called Brahman. Aitareya, Shatapatha, Panchvish, Taitriya etc. are particularly important in the ancient Brahmins. Maharishi Yajnavalkya has received the teachings of Brahmin texts including mantras from Aditya.
Under the samhitas, the method of rituals which is prescribed in the brahmana is clearly explained. In the ancient tradition, there was a method of reciting the Vedas according to the ashram. Therefore, the brahmacharis used to recite only the hymns, the householders of the Brahmins, the Vanprastha Aranyakas and the sanyasis of the Upanishads. The Veda part of the Garhasthya Dharma is considered to be Brahman. It is mainly presented in the prose genre. From the Brahmanical texts we get the knowledge of the event before Bimbisara. The most subsequent Brahmin is the Gopatha.
aranyak
Aranyaka is that part of the Vedas which the Vanprastha people used to recite in the forest after relinquishing their homestead. For this reason the name Aranyaka was given.
1. Its main themes are mysticism, symbolism, sacrifice and priestly philosophy.
2. There are currently seven Aranyakas available.
3. No Aranyaka of Samaveda and Atharvaveda is available in a clear and distinct form.
Upanishads
The Upanishads are a collection of the oldest philosophical ideas.
1.The total number of Upanishads is 108.
2. Mainly, details of the mystic theories related to the eternal soul, Brahman, the relationship between the soul-Parmatma and the origin of the universe have been given.
3. "Satyameva Jayate" is taken from Mundakopanishad.
4. The Maitrayani Upanishad mentions the doctrine of Trimurti and Chartu Ashram.
Vedang
In the epoch, six disciplines (branches) were born for Vedic study, which are called 'Vedanga'. Vedanga literally means part of the Vedas, however, due to the masculine nature of this literature, it is counted separately from the Shruti literature. Vedanga is also called Smriti, because it is considered to be the creation of human beings. Vedanga is in the form of a sutra, an attempt has been made to keep more facts in less words. Sutra literature is a part of Vedic literature. It is also helpful in understanding it.
Brahma Sutra - Lord Sriveda Vyasa, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, has written this most esoteric text on Vedanta.
Kalpa Sutra - Most important from historical point of view. Hand of the Vedas Local Vedang.
Source Sutra - Explanation of detailed procedures related to Mahayagya. The first part of the Vedanga Kalpasutra.
The second part of the Kalpa, which prescribes the Smarta Sutrashodash rites
Sulbasutra - The rules related to the construction and measurement of the place of sacrifice and the fire vedi are in it. It shows the early form of Indian geometry. The third part of the cycle.
Dharma Sutra- It contains socio-religious laws and code of conduct. fourth part of the cycle
Grihya Sutras - There is a discussion of the rituals related to family rites, festivals and personal sacrifices.
