Rise of Marathas
Today's Maharashtra is the plateau region of the southwest part of India.
The people here have been very hardworking because of the rough and less fertile land.
Here Ryotwari rent system was applicable in which the farmer was not subordinate to any zamindar. So there was less class discrimination based on exploitation.
The Shudras and Brahmins in the Maratha region were closer than in other regions of the country.
This social unity was further strengthened by the Bhakti movement of the 15th and 16th centuries.
Saints like Dnyaneshwar, Eknath, Tukaram, Ramdas etc. contributed to the rise of the spirit of Maratha regionalism.
The circumstances were favorable but political leadership was needed.
Shivaji transformed the social unity and national identity of the Marathas into Swarajya through his efficient political and strategic leadership.
Guerrilla warfare was another important reason for the strategic success of the Marathas. In this, they used to suddenly attack the enemies by hiding in small detachments and with the same speed they used to hide in the jungles and mountains.
Initially the Marathas were under the Yadavas of Devagiri. After the fall of Devagiri they went to serve the Bahmani kingdom.
Chhatrapati Shivaji (1627-1680):
The rise of Maratha power took place during the time of Aurangzeb under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji.
Shivaji was born on April 20, 1627 in the fort of Shivner.
He was the son of Shahaji Bhonsle's first wife Jija Bai, who married another woman named Tukabai Mohite. That is why Jija Bai used to live separately from him.
Shahaji Bhonsle had started service as a soldier in Ahmednagar state but later on the strength of his ability got the jagir of Poona.
Shahji gave the Poona jagir to his 12-year-old son Shivaji in 1940 and himself took up the job of Bijapur concession.
Shivaji formed a fighting squad of Mavalis (people of the Maval region). With these, Shivaji got his initial victories.
Shivaji first captured the toran fort of Bijapur. Then also captured the forts like Sinhagad, Chakan, Purandar, Supa, Kalyan, Jawali and Raigad.
Disturbed by Shivaji's military successes, the Bijapur Sultan sent Afzal Khan in 1659 to control him.
Afzal Khan persuaded Shivaji to come out of his fort on the pretext of treaty negotiations, but Afzal Khan's messenger Krishna Ji Bhaskar gave a signal to Shivaji about Afzal Khan's conspiracy.
Then Shivaji tore his stomach with the tiger that he took away.
Concerned with the growing influence of Shivaji, Aurangzeb sent his maternal uncle Shaista Khan as the Subedar of the South in 1660. Shaista Khan took possession of Poona. A select few on the night of April 15, 1663
Shivaji along with the soldiers entered the cantonment of Shaista Khan and attacked. Shaista Khan escaped but one of his thumb was amputated.
In January 1664, Shivaji plundered the prosperous port city of Surat, which was occupied by the Mughals.
Enraged by all these activities, Aurangzeb sent Rajput general Jai Singh to control Shivaji.
The Mughal army captured many forts of Shivaji. Shivaji was forced to make a treaty of Purandar with Jai Singh in 1665. According to the Treaty of Purandar, Shivaji got 23 of his 33
The fort had to be given to the Mughals. His son Sambha ji was given a mansab of 5000 in the Mughal court. Shivaji pledged to fight against Bijapur on behalf of the Mughals and serve the Mughal Empire.
Gave. Nicolao Manucci was present there at the time of this treaty.
After this treaty, Shivaji reached Agra to meet Aurangzeb, but Aurangzeb imprisoned him. Shivaji somehow escaped from there with his son Sambha ji.
Shivaji reached the Deccan safely and reconquered many forts. In 1760, Shivaji strengthened his economic position by plundering Surat again.
On June 16, 1674, Shivaji was coronated by the famous Pandit Ganga Bhatt of Kashi at Raigad Fort.
Shivaji assumed the title of Chhatrapati, Handava Dharmadokar and Gau-Brahmin Pratipalak.
In 1678, Shivaji conquered the fort of Jinji.
Shivaji made Jinji the capital of the southern region of the Maratha kingdom.
Shivaji died on 14 April 1680 at the age of 53.
At the time of Shivaji's death, the Maratha Empire extended from Belgaum to the Tungabhadra River throughout western Karnataka.
Thus Shivaji succeeded in establishing an independent and powerful Hindu kingdom in the south, despite strong opposition from the great Mughal Empire, the Sultan of Bijapur, the Portuguese of Goa and the Abyssinian pirates of Janjira.
